My Favourite Geeky Social Networks
Hey guys! It’s good to be back writing another post after a busy and kinda chaotic week. Hubby and I just celebrated our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple and it was purr-fect. Literally, I took him to Toronto’s Cat Cafe and we spent an amazing few hours cuddling with the cats and sipping cappuccinos! As a lifelong “dog person”, I’ve always been stubbornly anti-cat, but the idea is kinda growing on me… But I digress. Let’s jump into my favourite geeky social networks!
I’ve been sitting on this blog post for awhile, but finally got a chance to perfect it to a point I’m happy with. I wanted to originally do a comprehensive list of all the geeky social networks I knew of. I decided instead (with some helpful input from the hubs!) to limit this to a few that I know really well. These are social networks I’ve personally used and love! Read on to find out more.
My Favourite Geeky Social Networks
For anyone unfamiliar, reddit brands itself as the “front page of the internet”, and they’re not wrong! A community comprised of many different “subreddits” on various topics would be grossly oversimplifying what reddit is, but that’s a good starting point. Reddit is a great tool for meeting people interested in the same geeky things you are and connecting with them! It’s also a source for all things news, pop culture, politics, gaming, and memes as well. Reddit is hands down one of my favourite and most used social networks. I guarantee there’s a subreddit for you out there! Some great communities that I frequent are r/PokemonGo, r/Twitch, r/Gaming, r/Travel, and r/GamerPals.
Labelled as the worlds “leading social video platform”, Twitch is a fantastic hub for gamers, video game culture, and the creative arts. It’s a place where viewers (you and me) and casters (the individuals who live stream) can connect. Twitch is also the place where I first met the man who is now my husband, so this site has a special place in my heart~! The community aspect of Twitch is really unlike any other, and once you settle into a nice one you’ll never go back! You can search for a specific game, or enjoy some talented artists over on the creative section, or even hang around and shoot the shit with Twitch’s new IRL category. Looking for a place to start? Check out these fantastic casters and their communities! Brotatoe, BennyFits, PixelMonkey, Zer0Doxy
This a utility app/social network hybrid that aims to connect nerds around the world. It’s a really simple but effective event calendar app, allowing people from tons of different cities to list conventions, tournaments, and other geeky events in their area. With an event inventory ranging from Geek Girl Brunches to Lightsaber Battles or Geeks Who Drink Pub Nights, this app has it all! If you’ve wanted to find your geeky tribe irl or just stay up to date on the nerdy & fandom related happenings in your city, this is the app for that. If this sounds like a social utility you would use, click the image above to check it out and support them! The app is available on iOs and andriod.
Ah, Google +, the often overlooked social network! I honestly have little use for my G+ besides their communities, which I’ll be focusing on here. There are a ton of different communities to explore (some public and some invitation only) on a range of topics. I’m a member of many different ones, and you can find pretty much anything ranging from Comics, Female Geek Bloggers, PC Gamers, to Smart Phone Photography, Journalling Tips, or Beauty and Makeup! Go here and log in to begin searching for the right community for you!
This is another fantastic site that I would almost call the Facebook of gaming. Status updates, sharing photo and video, and connecting with other gamers are just a few of the features on player.me. They also have a group system, so you can join and meet fellow Indie Game lovers, League of Legends players, Twitch streamers, or whatever else you’re interested in! This site is really well done and for some reason seldom talked about. It’s definitely worth a look! You can check out my profile here.
CGN is another social network for gamers, with a bunch of useful capabilities. Connecting streamers, gamers, and fans alike, this site has a ton of functionality, and interlinks with Twitter & Facebook for cross-posting. Meet your next gaming buddy or discover your new favourite streamer or Youtuber! They also feature a marketplace where you can buy and sell, or even offer services like graphic creation, editing, and more.
I hope you enjoyed reading through this post. Maybe I’ve inspired you to try some of these out! Leave a comment telling me YOUR fave geeky social networks, or continue the conversation with me on Twitter 🙂
